4 Generations of Cephalosporrins- 1st-cephalaxin (keflex), 2nd- cefaclor (Ceclor), 3rd-cefdinir (Omnicef) Tetracyclines (TCNS)-They can be used for lyme disease & malaria EX: Minocycline (minocin)& Oxytetracycline (Terramycin)
Macrolides-are mainly bateriustatic, EX: Azithromycin (Zithromax) & Clarithromycin (Biaxin) Aminoglycosides- bacterialcidal antibiotics.(severe inf of the abdomen) Given IV only
Aminoglycosides are ototoxic drugs (can cause permanent hearing loss) EX: Gentamicin (Garamycin), Tobramycin (Nebcin), Amilcacin (Amikin) Florquinolones- (Quinolones)- bactericidial- treat infections of the bone, joints, EX: Ciproflaxacin (Cipro), Ofloxacin (Floxin)
Sulfonamides- "sulfa drugs", treat tavelers diarrhea- EX: Sulfisoxazole (Gontrisin), Sulfamethoxazole & Trimethoprim(Septra bactrin) (SMZ_TMP) Antifungles 3 categories: drugs for systemic mycoses, oral drugs for mucocutaneous inf, Topical drugs for mucocutaneous inf
Mycosis- cond. in wich fungi pass the resistance barrials of the human or animal body & establish inf. Mucocutaneous zone- region of skin comprising both mucosa & cutaneous skin. These mostly occur near the orifices of the body @ which the exterinal skin stops & the mucosa that covers the inside of the dody starts
Drugs for treatment of systemic mycoses:amphotericin (amphocin) IVflucytosine(Ancoban) POKetoconazole (Nizoral) PO Griseofulvin (fulvicin, Grifulvin V) PONystatin (mycostatin) POFluconazole (Diflucan) PO or IV are for local candida albicans (yeast inf) of the skin and mucous membranes
Some Topical antifungal drugs: Amphotericin B(Fungizone)ciclopirox (Penlac, Loptox)clortrimazole (Lotrimin) Anti viral Agents: viruses cause much of the death in the world, # of drugs to treat viruses is very low.
In the last decade the devep. of antiviral drugs has increased due to the AIDS epidenmic. There are only a few antivirals that have been used sucessfully in the US. However, there are several viral diseases, including measles, mumps, rubella, varicella(chk pox), small pox and rabies that are prevented by vaccines.
EX of antivirals: Acyclovir (zovirax)Amantadine (symmetrol)Gancyclovir (cytovene) HAART- highly active antiretroviral therapy- this is when several antiretroviral drugs typically 3 or 4
"AIDS & HIV COCKTAIL" - 2 catagoris of drugs that are combined or neucloside analogs & protease inhibitors
