| Anti-infective- A general term under which various types os drug are sub clasified. | Some anti- infecties treat bateria only-these are known as antibacterials |
| Some anti- infectives treat bateria only these are known as antifungals & some treat more than one type of pathogens | Another word for anti infeective is anti microbial wich means againts the growth of microorganism or microbe. |
| Some major types of antibiotics by drug class: | Sulfa drugs, PCN, cephalosporins, aminohlycosides, tetracycines(TCN), macrolides, & synthetic antibaterial agents such as nitrofurantoin and the Quinolones |
| Penicillins- (4-groups) (4 generations) the are natural PCN, peniallinase- resistant PCN, peniallinase- resistant PCNS, Aminopenicillins and extended spectrum PCN's | There are more allergies to PCN than to any other drug class. Usual reaction- The worst case is a severe allergy that results in anaphylactic shock, in which case, epinephrin must be administered w/in 5-20min or person may die. |
| 1st gen- natural PCN-penecillin G benzathine (Bicillin) | 2nd gen- Aminopenicillins- (Omnipen) Extended spectrum penicillians |
| 3rd gen- ticarcillin (Ticar) | 4th gen- piperacillin (Pipracil) |
| *Chephalosporins- chemical cousin to PCN. If pt allergic to PCN there is a 5-20% chance they are allergic to PCN |
