poetry terms for 9th grade english

TermDefinition
Alliteration The repetition of similar sounds at the beginning and middle of words within a sentence or phrase
Assonace The repetition or pattern of vowel sounds in lines of text
Consonance the repetition or pattern of non vowel sound in lines of text
Couplet A pair of lines that are the some length, rhyme, and form a complete thought.
Metaphor Comparing one thing to another without using "Like" or "As"
Extended Metaphor Comparing one thing to another without using like or as, and the comparison continues throughout the text.
Imagery Creating a picture in the mind of the reader using one or more of their five senses
Verbal Irony When you say one thing but mean something else.
Situational Irony When you expect one thing to happen, but through a twist of fate, something unexpected occurs
Dramatic Irony When the audience knows something about a character that other characters do not.
Onomatopiea A figure of speech in which words are used to imitate sounds
Personification A figure of speech in which non living/non human things are a given human like qualities
Quatrain A stanza or poem of four lines
Refrrain A phrase, line, or group of lines repeated at intervals throughout a poem, generally at the end of stanzas
Rhyme The occurrence of the same or similar sounds at the end of two or more words
Rhyme Scheme Any pattern of rhyme in a poem. Each new sound is assigned a letter of the alphabet
Simile Comparing one thing to another using "like" or "as"
Stanza Two or mores lines of poetry that together form one of the divisions of poetry
