What is a simple machine? A tool to make work easier.
What is work? Lifting, pushing, pulling, moving, and holding together a heavy load.
What are the six simple machines? lever, inclined plane, wedge, wheel and axle, screw, pulley
What is a lever? A stiff bar that moves about at a fixed point. It is used to push, pull, or lift things.
Name examples of a lever. seesaw, crowbar, shovel
What is an inclined plane? A flat surface that is raised so that one end is higher than the other. It helps move heavy objects up or down.
Name examples of an inclined plane. Ramp, stairs, ladder
What is a wedge? It is a tool wide at one end and pointed at the other to help cut or split other objects.
Name examples of a wedge. knife, ax, chisel, blades of scissors, door stop, bow of a ship, wing of an airplane, oar
What is a wheel and axle? A rod attached to a wheel. It makes it easier to move or turn things.
Name examples of a wheel and axle. bicycle wheels, roller blades, door knob, car wheels, skate board wheels
What kind of a simple machine is a screw? It is an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder or cone. It is used to hold objects together.
Name examples of screws. a wood screw, jar lid, mountain road, spiral staircase
What is a pulley? It is a wheel that has a rope wrapped around it. Pulleys can be used to lift heavy objects by changing the direction or amount of the force needed to move the object.
Name examples of pulleys. Pulleys are found on flagpoles, cranes, and sailboats.
What is a compound machine? It is a combination of two or more simple machines.
Name examples of compound machines. Scissors, wheelbarrow, bicycle, pencil sharpener
What is force? The push or pull needed to move an object.
