Syntax Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| Parallelism | A series of words, phrases and/or clauses in the same grammatical construction. |
| Balanced | A compound sentence that has its independent clauses grammatically mirror each other. |
| Antithesis | The juxtaposition of contrasting ideas, often in parallel structure; especially used to suggest wit. |
| Periodic | Subject and verb found at the end of the sentence. |
| Anastrophe | Inversion of the natural or usual word order |
| Asyndeton | A series of phrases or clauses put together without the coordinating conjuctions. |
| Ellipsis | Deliberate omission of a word or of words which are readily implied by the context; indicates economy of expression. |
| Nominative Absolute | A phrase containing a noun modified by a present or past participle; indicates economy of expression. |
| Parenthesis | Insertion of some verbal unit in a position that interrupts the normal syntactical flow of the sentences. |
| Apposition | Playing side by side two co-ordinate elements, the second of which serves as an explanation or modification of the first. |
| Anaphora | Repetition of the same word or group of words at the beginnings of successive clauses. |
| Antimetabole | Repetition of words, in successive clauses, in reverse grammatical order. |
| Polysyndeton | A series of words, phrases, or clauses each connected with a conjunction; indicated an air of solemness, draws emphasis to the things, connected; suggest a piling up of things, emotions, etc. |
| Anadiplosis | Repeating the last word of one sentence (or clause) as the first word of the next sentence. |
| Anaphora | Repeating the same word or phrase at the beginnings of clauses or sentences. |
| Epistrophe | Repeating the same word or phrase at the end of clauses or sentences. |
| Epanalepsis | Using the same word or phrase at the beginning of a sentence and at the end. |
| Antimetabole | Repeats words in reverse order |
| Chiasmus | Reverses grammatical elements |
| Ellipsis | Omitting one or more words |
| Asyndeton | Omitting the junction that comes just before the last item in a parallel series |
| Polysyndeton | Adds conjunctions where they are not normally present in a series |
| Epanorthosis | "correction" conveys a sense of immediacy |
