apostrophe a term used when a speaker directly addresses someone or something that isn't present in the poem.
blank verse verse that has no rhyme scheme, but does have a regular meter—iambic pentameter.
free verse a poetic style that lacks a regular meter or rhyme scheme.
rhymed couplets a pair of lines of verse that rhyme
Shakespearean Sonnet (English) sonnets that have three four-line stanzas (quatrains) and a two-line unit called a couplet.
Petrarchan Sonnet (Italian) a sonnet form that divides the poem's 14 lines into two parts, the first part being an octet and the second being a sestet.
pastorals a form of poetry that glorifies the simple life, the rural life, the country life.
grotesque character a character who has become twisted or change due to an obsession and induces both empathy and disgust
genre a specific type of music, film, or writing
regional dialect a distinct form of a language spoken in a particular geographical area
