| blank verse | verse that has no rhyme scheme, but does have a regular meter—iambic pentameter. |
| free verse | a poetic style that lacks a regular meter or rhyme scheme. |
| rhymed couplets | a pair of lines of verse that rhyme |
| Shakespearean Sonnet (English) | sonnets that have three four-line stanzas (quatrains) and a two-line unit called a couplet. |
| Petrarchan Sonnet (Italian) | a sonnet form that divides the poem's 14 lines into two parts, the first part being an octet and the second being a sestet. |
| pastorals | a form of poetry that glorifies the simple life, the rural life, the country life. |
| grotesque character | a character who has become twisted or change due to an obsession and induces both empathy and disgust |
| genre | a specific type of music, film, or writing |
| regional dialect | a distinct form of a language spoken in a particular geographical area |
