TermDefinition
Matter Anything that takes up space and has mass
Physical property Characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing the substance into another substance.
Chemical property Characteristic of a substance that describes its ability to change into other substances.
Physical change Any change that alters the form or appearance of a substance, but does not make the substance into another substance
Chemical change Also called a chemical reaction, this is a change in matter that produces one or more NEW substances. The atoms are REARRANGED (do not disappear) to form new substances with different physical and chemical properties.
Reactant The substances that undergo a chemical change or reaction
Product The NEW substances that are formed from a chemical change or reaction.
Precipitate A solid that forms from a solution during a chemical change or reaction.
Endothermic reaction The making and breaking of bonds results in a net absorption of energy that leads to cooling.
Exothermic reaction Making and breaking of bonds results in a net release of energy that leads to heat.
Mass The measure of how much matter is in an object (grams)
