The Student's Guide to Cognitive Neuroscience

What two systems make up the Peripheral Nervous System and what do they do? The Autonomic System controls involuntary responses (Sympathetic and Parasympathetic) and the Somatic System controls voluntary responses.
I am made of the brain and spinal cord. What am I? The Central Nervous System.
Name the steps of brain development. Neurogenesis, migration, differentiation
In what order are the parts of the brain developed? The neural tube, then the hindbrain, then the midbrain, then the forebrain.
Name the Four Lobes of the Brain. The Frontal, Temporal, Parietal, and Occipital Lobes.
What lobe of the brain would help you recognize if a stick is oriented horizontal or vertical visually? Occipital!
What lobe of the brain would help you recognize the sound of your mother's voice? Temporal!
What lobe of the brain would help you recognize where your arm is right now? Parietal!
What lobe of the brain would help you decide between eating eggs for breakfast or eating two whole cakes? Frontal!
Like Henry Morales, I can't remember what happened yesterday and I won't remember tomorrow what happened today. What part of my brain is missing? Hippocampus!
I am right-handed, what hemisphere of the brain will control my hand moving across the page to write? Left!
I am left-handed, what hemisphere of the brain will control my hand moving across the page to write? Right!
I am creative and like lots of pretty colors. Which hemisphere of my brain is dominant, and why? Neither! This myth is based on cross-lateralization of the brain, or the control of one side of the body by the opposite side of the brain. (Right hand controlled by left hemisphere, Left hand controlled by right hemisphere)
I am a little man in your brain and I have HUGE lips. Why? Bonus - In what lobe am I located? Because a large portion of the sensory cortex is devoted to processing sensory input from the lips. The parietal lobe!

George hit his head during a car accident and is now having trouble understanding what people are saying, even though he can hear them. As his doctor, what area of the brain is most likely damaged? Wernicke's Area!
Martha hit her head during a car accident and is now unable to say anything but the word "tan," but is able to write out what she wants to say and understands what other people are saying. As her doctor, what area of her brain was most likely damaged? Broca's Area!
