Energy Stack - Zoei

TermDefinition
What is force? A push or a pull exerted on an object in order to change the motion of an object (N)
What is work? The use of force to move an object some distance (J) W = F x D
What is a wave? Transport of energy without the transport of matter (light and sound waves are examples)
What is a medium? The material - solid, liquid, or gas - through which a wave can travel
What is a crest? The point where the wave is highest
What is a trough? The point where the wave is lowest
What is a longitudinal wave? Where particles move back and forth in the same direction that the wave travels
What is compression? The reduction in volume
What is rarefaction? Diminution in the density of something, especially air or gas
What is a transverse wave? Where particles move perpendicularly to the direction the wave travels
What are mechanical waves? Waves the require a medium
What are electromagnetic waves? Where waves are vibrations of electric and magnetic fields
What is amplitude? A measure of how far particles in the medium move from their rest position
What is wavelength? The distance from any point on a wave to the next identical point on the same wave
What is frequency? The number of waves that pass a point in a given amount of time, usually one second
What are Hertz(Hz)? One hertz is equal to one wavelength per second
What is wave speed? The speed that waves travel wave speed = frequency x wavelength
What is power? The rate at which work is done
If a group of workers can apply a force of 2500 Newtons to move a crate 25 meters, what amount of work will they have accomplished? W = F x D W = 2500 x 25 W = 62,500 J
A set of pulleys lifts an 1000 N crate 6 meters in 10 seconds. What power was used? W = F x D P = W / t W = 1000 x 6 P = 6000 / 10 W = 6000 J P = 600 watts
A slinky was used to demonstrate how to calculate wave speed. The frequency was 5.3 m/s and the wavelength was 3 m/s, what is the wave speed? The wave speed is 15.9 m/s
A compression is comparable to a _____ ___________ in a transverse wave. A rarefaction is comparable to a ___ __________ in a transverse wave. high frequency/low frequency
The SI unit for work is... force
The SI unit for power is the... watt
If 470 Joules of work are needed to move a crate a distance of 6 meters, what is the weight of the crate? F = W / D F = 470 / 6 F = 78.34 N
How much time is needed to produce 680 Joules of work if 65 watts of power is used? t = W / P t = 680 / 65 t = 10.46 sec.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
