| *Glacucoma- A hroup of eye diseases characterized by an increase in intraocular pressure. | *Intraocular- w/in the eye |
| Two main types of Glaucoma: open angle & closed angle. open=90% of all cases/closed=least common & most devastating | Secondary Glaucoma- result of eye injury, inflammation, tumor, advanced cases of catoracts or diabetes, or drug induced (steriods) |
| Cataracts- an ocular opacity or obscurity in the lens of the eye | **3 Major Areas of the Ear***outer, middle, & inner |
| *cerumen- Ear wax | Types of hearing loss: most typical are conductive, sensory, drug induced, neural,& prebycusis |
| *Conductive -when there is a prob. w/ a ppart of the outer or middle ear. | EX: blow to the head or ear, birth defects, malformation of part of the out or mid ear, tiny hole in ear drum, wax in canal & mid ear infections. |
| *Sensory- one or both ears & occurs when the cochlea is not working properly b/c cilia have been damaged or destroyed.........- | -Almost always permanent, may be due to heredity, or occur during fetal devp. if mother get certain diseases(Rubella-german measles) |
| -other possible causes- Certain meds, severe head injury, frequent loud music, exposure to other loud noises (factor machinery, airplane engines & race cars) | *Drug induced- use of some ototoxic drugs that impair hearing & balance. (iv aminoglycosides, loop diuretics, anti neoplastics, & quinine containing drugs. |
| -Large doses of Asprin can cause tinnitus(ringing or buzz) | -Neural- occurs when there is a prob.w/ the connection from the cochlea to the brain(this is permanent hearing loss) |
| -Presbycusis- permanent loss of hearing due to damaged hearing nerves. | *when hearing deteriorate with age, sensitivity to high-pitched sounds fades first |
| -Otitis Media- infection & inflammation of the middle ear | If otitis media is left untreated permanent hearing loss, rupture of the tympanic membrane(ear drum) &/or meningitis may develope. |
| *First-line therapy for treatment of Otitis media in children includes- | Bactrim(sulfamathoxazole-Trimethoprim)(SMZ-TMP)Amoxil, Trimox, Wymox (Amoxicillin) |
