MELANOCYTES- RESPONSIBLE FOR PIGMENTATION THE EPIDERMIS IS THE THINNEST LAYER OF SKIN. THE DERMIS CONTAINS FIBROBLASTS,WHICHIS RESPONSIBLE FOR SECRETING PROTEINS, COLLAGENS,& ELASTIN. THE DERMIS IMPORTANT ROLE IS TO MAINTAIN TEMPERTURE IS 98.6.
SUBCUTANEOUS ALSO CALLED THE HYPODERMIS, STORES ADIPOSE OR FAT TISSUE AND CONNECTIVE TISSUE. A RASH-AN AREA OF REDNESS CAUSED BY IRRITATION & INFLAMMATION. EX. of a rash:acne contact dermatitis eczema hives psorisis. eczema-inflammitory skin condition charatized by itching redness and blistering.
immunomodulators- agents that affects the body immune system in some way. 2 FDA approved meds to treat eczema are elidel(mild/moderate)& protopic(severe) psoriasis- noncontagious chronic skin disease; rapid skin cell turnover resulting in thick,red scaly skin. psorsis affect 2% of the us population.
3 types of skin infections: viral bacterial fungal. tx for psorisis- enbrel(injectable) remicade(iv) amevive(im or infusion) raptiva(SC-once a wk) elidel(orally) infection-invasion of pathogens into the body.ex of viral infection:warts herpes simplex shingles(herpes zoster)chicken pox measles. new drug for treating external genial warts- aldara(imiquimod)5% cream.
HPV-most common std bacterial infections are staphylocci, streptocci, pneudomona's. ex. of bacterial infections are lyme disease impetigo folliculitis cellulitis(most common) bactericidal-kills bacterial or bacteriostatic-inhibits the growth of reproduction of microorganisms
fungal infections occurs when harmless fungi gain entry into the skin rather than staying on the epidermis.these infections are USUALLY external affecting the skin,hair and nails.ex:tinea pedis(atheletes feet) tinea crurls(jock itch) and ringworm acne is the most common skin disease occurs in approximately 85% of people between 12-24yrs. most common parasitic infections are scabies and lice. tumors/cancerous growths occur when skin cells multiply or reproduce faster than normal.can w/wo mutation(benign/noncancerous)
malignant/cancerous reproduce rapidly with cell mutation. 3 types of skin cancer: basal ,squamous, malignant. basal is the most common /most curable. squamous is the 2nd most common & accounts for 20%of all skin cancer. malignant is the most deadliest burns can be characterized by: thermal chemical electrical friction sunburn
