| ***DISEASES OF THE EYE*** | The eyes are prone to many diseases and disorders, including infection, vision prob, and allergic reactions. |
| *stye- an infection of one or more of the sebaceous glands of the eye | *blepharitis- inflammation of the eyelid margin accompanied by redness |
| *conjunctivitis- acute or chronic inflammation of the eye conjunctiva | THERE ARE 4 MAJOR CAUSES: allergies, bateria, viruses and chlamydia |
| *Allergic conjunctivitis-"red eye" caused by hay fever, dust, mite dander, or animal dander. (seasonal & not contagious) | *Baterial Conjunctivitis- starts in 1 eye & soon spreads to the other. Includes thick sticky mucopurulent, discharge that cause the eyelids&eyelashes to be matted shut upon awakening. |
| *Mucopurulent- containing mucus or puss*Bacterial conjunctivitis is highly contagous, can be treated w/ broad-spectrum antibiotics. | *Viral Conjuntivitis- "pink eye", highly contagious usually follows an upper respiratory infction or contact w/ someone who is infected. |
| *Conjunctivitis caused by chlamydia- often referred to as neonatal inclusion conjunctivitis or swimming pool conjunctivitis | *newborns can acquire the infection fron their mothers as they pass through the birth canal |
| Neonates are treated w/ Erythromycin 12.5mg/kg po or iv qidx14d, b/c pheumonia & other complications may result from untreated conjunctivitis |
