Story Elements Vocab

TermDefinition
protagonist "hero" or “heroine” of the story
antagonist character who provides conflict in a story - "villain"
setting time and place in which the story takes place
conflict a struggle or a problem in the story that needs to be resolved
internal conflict struggle within a character
external conflict character struggles against another character
climax the turning point of the story, the most suspenseful part of the story
first person point of view narrator is a character in the story and uses words like "I" and “me”
third person omniscient point of view all knowing point of view; narrator relates the thoughts and feelings of several or all characters
third person limited point of view narrator relates the thoughts and feeling of one character
theme message about life or human nature conveyed in a literary work
resolution how the problem is solved in a story;usually at the end of the story
point of view perspective from which the story is told
