Scientific Inquiry

QuestionAnswer
QUALITATIVE OBSERVATIONS made by gathering information using your senses about events or processes
QUANTITATIVE OBSERVATIONS involve measurement; should include number and a unit.
INFERENCE guess based on prior knowledge or experience; may be incorrect if data incomplete.
HYPOTHESIS proposed scientific explanation for a set of observations.
INDEPENDENT VARIABLE also called the manipulated variable; part of experiment that is deliberately changed. There should only be ONE manipulated variable in a scientific experiment.
DEPENDENT VARIABLE also called the responding variable; the variable that is observed and changes in response to the independent (manipulated) variable
CONTROL GROUP not exposed to the independent variable so that it can be used as COMPARISON to the experimental data.
