| DENSITY | formula: mass divided by volume; in common terms, how heavy something is for its size. By doing this math, you cut the volume down to an equal size so that you have a more equal, fair comparison. |
| DENSITY applied | Compared to density of water, substances with lower density will float; with higher density will sink; substances have characteristic densities |
| NEWTON'S FIRST LAW | inertia: an object in motion stays in motion and an object at rest stays at rest. Application: first gear in car has to have more power to get car moving. Planets stay in motion, always pulled in by gravity, moving away by inertia. Balance=orbit. |
| Newton’s 2nd Law | F = ma (force equals mass times acceleration)Application: weapons |
| Newton’s 3rd Law | for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Application: rocket launch |
| ENERGY TRANSFER | Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be transferred from one form to another (i.e. electrical to mechanical) |
| Types of energy: thermal | Heat energy: ALWAYS travels from hot to cold. |
| Types of energy: mechanical | movement (eg. pedaling a bicycle) |
| Types of energy: chemical | produced by chemical reactions (eg. potential: chemicals in a battery, food in your body) |
| Types of energy: radiant | Electromagnetic spectrum...all travel at speed of light; do not need media for transfer. Examples: light, gamma, radio waves |
| Types of energy: electrical | movement of electrons |
