TermDefinition
Experiment -Can determine whether treatment group differs from control group as a result of receiving the treatment. -This is the ONLY research design that allows you to make claims about one variable CAUSING another.
Quasi-experiment (Randomized) Can determine whether treatment groups differs from control group, but cannot be SURE that the treatment caused the difference due to lack of random assignment.
Correlational Study (Hats) -Can examine relationship between two variables. -CAN NOT assume causation or direction of relationship.
Observational Study (Ice Cream and Robbery) Can see how variables change in relation to each other in the real world.
Action Research -Can see relationships between new methods and student achievement. -CAN NOT draw causal conclusion.
Intentional teaching -Knowing the material is not enough -Good communication skills -Asking for feedback & assessing understanding -Learner awareness- cultural, intellectual, social -Ability to motivate students -Classroom management skills
Sensorimotor (Birth- Age 2) -Object Permanence -Trial and error to problem solving and thinking
Preoperational (Ages 2-7) -No conservation -Centration -No reversibility -Egocentrism
Concrete Operational (Ages 7-11) -Inferred Reality -Seriation -Transitivity -Class inclusion -Logical thinking not abstract
Formal Operational (Ages 11- Adulthood) Abstract and symbolic thinking are possible.
Assimilation Understanding new experiences by using existing schemes.
Accomodation Understanding new experiences by creating new schemes.
