conformity processes through which our thoughts, feelings and behaviors are influenced by the people in our social contexts
charismatic leaders leaders who are enthusiastic, committed and self-confident, who tend to talk about the importance of group goals at a broad level, and make personal sacrifices for the group
contingency model of leadership effectiveness interactionist theory of leadership, proposed by Fielder, which suggests that leadership effectiveness is determined by both person variables and situational variables
informational conformity change in opinion or behavior that occurs when we believe people have accurate information--usually ends in private acceptance
majority influence conformity that occurs when beliefs of a larger group prevail
minority influence occurs when beliefs of small group prevail
normative conformity expression of opinions of behavior that occurs b/c we wish to be accepted by others, or to avoid being isolated/rejected--usually ends with public compliance
leadership ability to direct or inspire others to achieve goals
obedience conformity that is caused by the presence of authority
personality theory of leadership the idea that some people are simply "natural" leaders due to their personality
private acceptance real change in opinions for person who has conformed
psychological reactance emotional state that is aroused when our ability to choose which behaviors to engage in is eliminated or threatened with elimination. The outcome of the experience is that we may not conform at all, instead rebel against expressed opinions of others
publi compliance superficial change in behavior (including public expression of opinions), which is not accompanied by an actual change in private opinion
social impact increase in the amount of conformity that is produced by adding new members to the majority group. impact is greater for initial groups members than for later group members
social norms socially accepted beliefs about what we do/should do in social contexts
social power ability of an individual to create behavioral or belief changes in another person, even when person be influenced attempts to resist those changes
