Matter, Phases, Atom

Phases, Phase Changes, Definition of Matter, Atom, Periodic Table basics

QuestionAnswer
Proton charge and location positive charge, inside nucleus.
Neutron charge and location neutral charge, inside nucleus.
Electron charge and location negative charge, outside nucleus/electron cloud
Element 94 naturally occurring on earth; can be found as a square on the periodic table
Atomic Number tells you the number of protons and electrons
Atomic Weight (mass) The weight of the protons and neutrons in the nucleus (electrons have almost no weight)
Chemical Symbol Short way of writing the elements name. (1st letter always capitalized, rest lower case)
Matter Anything that has mass AND volume
Non-matter Anything energy. (Heat, sound, light)
Temperature the vibration of the particles, temperature can stop changing and stay the same.
Heat the vibration of the particles, heat never stop moving.
Solid Definite volume and definite shape.
Solids move.... Molecules move in place but cannot overcome the attraction between the molecules.
Liquid Definite volume, but no definite shape. They take the shape of their container.
Liquids move.... molecules are able to slide over each other but particles are still attracted to each other
Gas No definite shape or no definite volume
Gas move.... molecules have very little attraction to other particles and are highly energized.
Melting Solid to a liquid. Heat added
Freezing Liquid to a solid. Heat is removed
Evaporation Liquid to a gas. Heat is added
Condensation Gas to a liquid. Heat is removed
Sublimation Solid to a gas. Heat is added
Endothermic Heat is added
Exothermic Heat is removed
What happens to temperature during a phase change? Temperature stays the same
What happens to temperature during the phases of matter? Temperature goes up or down
What are the phases of matter? solid, liquid, gas
What are the phase changes of matter? Melting, Freezing, Evaporation, Condensation

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
