Forces

TermDefinition
Free-body Diagram Shows only the forces that act on an object.
Scale Used to measure weight.
Balance Used to measure mass.
Balanced Forces Equal forces acting on an object in opposite direction
Friction The force that one surface exerts on another when the two surface rub against each other
Static Friction Friction that acts an object that are not moving
Dynamic or Sliding Friction Friction that occurs when one solid surface slides over another
Rolling Friction The resistive force that slows down the motion of a rolling ball or wheel
Fluid Friction Friction that occurs as an object moves through a fluid
Mass A measure of how much matter is in an object
Inertia The tendency of an object to resist a change in motion
