| Antagonist | A character who works against the main character; the bad guy |
| Protagonist | The main character in a work of fiction |
| Plot | The main events in a story |
| Evidence | Your basis for belief or disbelief |
| Inference | Drawing a conclusion on the basis of circumstantial evidence |
| Imagery | The ability to form mental pictures of things or events |
| Simile | A figure of speech comparing two things using "like" or "as." |
| Metaphor | A figure of speech comparing two things |
| Alliteration | Use of the same consonant at the beginning of each word |
| Personification | Attributing human characteristics to abstract ideas |
| Analyze | To learn the nature and relationship of the parts of something by a close and careful examination |
| Persuade | To cause someone to do something by asking, arguing, or giving reasons |
| Compare | To look at two or more things closely in order to see what is similar |
| Contrast | To compare two people or things to show how they are different |
| Summarize | To tell information again using fewer words |
| Demonstrate | To prove something by showing examples of it |
| Interpret | To explain the meaning of something |
