| motion | an object is in motion when its distance from another object is changing |
| reference point | a place or object used for comparison to determine if something is in motion |
| SI unit for distance | meter |
| average speed (equation) | total distance traveled divided by total time |
| instantaneous speed | rate at which an object is moving at that point in time |
| velocity | speed of an object in a given direction |
| slope | the "steepness" of a line |
| acceleration | the rate at which velocity changes refers to increasing speed, decreasing speed, or changing direction |
| force | a push or a pull |
| newton | the SI units used for force (N) |
| net force | all of the forces acting on an object at one time |
| unbalanced forces | can cause an object to start, stop, or change direction |
| balanced forces | equal forces acting in opposite directions |
