Figurative Language

simile a comparison of two unlike things using the words like or as
metaphor a comparison of two unlike things by saying that one thing is a dissimilar object or thing
hyperbole an exaggeration that cannot possibly be true
personification giving human qualities to nonhuman things
onomatopoeia words whose sounds suggest their meaning
alliteration the repetition of the same initial consonant sound in a series or words
idiom a group of words whose collective meaning is quite different from their individual, literal meaning.
allusion a reference to a person, place, or event from literature, sports, history, movies, or the arts
stanza a group of lines, like a paragraph, in a poem
example - simile Your eyes are as blue as the sky.
example - metaphor Your room is a tornado.
example - hyperbole I have told this story a million times!
example - personification The sun smiled as it rose in the sky.
example - onomatopoeia Boom! The door slammed shut.
example - alliteration The bouncing baby bumbled his bottle.
