From Crude to Refined unit vocab

TermDefinition
atomic mass unit a unit of mass equal to 1/12 the mass of the most common isotope of carbon (Carbon-12) which is assigned a mass of 12. A hydrogen atom has a mass of 1 amu since its mass is 1/12 that of carbon. (mass of one proton or one neutron).
boiling point the temperature at which the vapor pressure of a liquid is just equal to the external pressure on the liquid.
Celsius scale the temperature scale on which the freezing point of water is 0 degrees C and the boiling point is 100 degrees C.
distillate the liquid product condensed from vapor during distillation
ester organic compounds derived from hydrocarbons which are usually pleasant smelling and used as artificial flavors.
fractional distillation a purification process by which chemical compounds are separated into components according to their boiling points.
intermolecular forces forces of attraction or repulsion which act between neighboring particles
heat of vaporization the amount of heat required to convert a liquid into a gas at constant temperature and pressure.
refine the process of separating the purifying a substance
refinery an industrial plant that uses mechanical and chemical means to purify a mixture such as petroleum or to convert it to a more useful form.
volatility the ease with which a liquid vaporizes
