PS MFAE Chapter 1
Motion and Momentum
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Vector Quantity | A quantity that expresses both magnitude and direction. |
| Scaler Quantity | A quantity that expresses either magnitude or direction. |
| Speed | Scaler quantity which expresses distance per unit time. |
| Overall Average Speed | A ratio of the total distance traveled to the total time elapsed. |
| Instantaneous Speed | The speed at any given moment in time. |
| Velocity | A vector quantity expressing both speed and direction. |
| Displacement | A vector quantity expressing straight-line distance between starting and ending positions and the direction of travel along that path. |
| Acceleration | A vector quantity expressing change in velocity divided by the change in time. |
| Distance | A scaler quantity describing change in position relative to another object. |
| Elastic Collision | A collision in which no energy is lost. Convergent motion tends to end in a bounce. |
| Inelastic Collision | A collision in which kinetic energy is lost. Convergent motion tends to end in a stick. |
| Superelastic Collision | A collision in which kinetic energy is gained. Explosions are an example of this phenomenon. |
| Motion | A change in position. |
