Elements of Thought

| Concept | A group of related qualities that define one idea |
| Prototype | IDEAL example of a concept |
| Proposition | Group of concepts that express one idea |
| Cognitive Schema | Mental Models for Aspects of our World |
| Mental Image | Visual image of a person or object |
| Subconscious | Thoughts/processes stored just outside the awareness |
| Nonconscious | Thoughts/processes that remain outside of your awareness |
| Reasoning | Purposeful mental activity in order to reach conclusions |
| Algorithm | Procedure guaranteed to produce the right answer |
| Deductive Reasoning | Conclusion necessarily follows premise |
| Inductive Reasoning | Conclusion probably follows |
| Heuristic | “Rule of Thumb”Suggests answer, but doesn't guarantee |
| Dialectal Reasoning | Comparing opposing points of view (point & counterpoint) |
| I. Reflective Judgment | Ability to evaluate evidence to reach logical conclusion |
| Pre-reflective Judgment (2 Stages) | 1) Belief that there IS one right answer— raised to believe this |
| Pre-reflective Judgment (2 Stages) | 2) This answer can be found through senses or authorities |
| Quasi-reflective Judgment (3 Stages) | 1) Recognize some things can’t be known for sure, not sure how to deal w/ this |
| Quasi-reflective Judgment (3 Stages) | 2) Realize judgment should be supported by reasons |
| Quasi-reflective Judgment (3 Stages) | 3) Only support evidence that fits with their own beliefs |
| Reflective Judgment (2 Stages) | 1) Nothing is certain, but some things more valid than others |
| Reflective Judgment (2 Stages) | 2) Consider evidence from all sides b-4 making decision |
