| Term | Definition |

| DEFENSE MECHANISM | Unconscious technique used to resolve or conceal conflicts and anxiety. eg. acting out, denial repression |
| DELIRIUM | Confused thinking, disorientation, changes in alertness. This is reversible impairment and can get better |
| DELIRIUM TREMENS | Is brought on by stopping alcohol consumption suddenly, after years of heavy alcohol ingestion |
| DELUSION | Fixed, false belief that cannot be changed by logical reasoning or evidence |
| DEMENTIA | Loss of intellectual abilities with impairment of memory, judgment and reasoning as well as changes in personality |
| DEPRESSION | Major mood change with chronic sadness, loss of energy, hopelessness, worry, and discouragement. |
| DISSOCIATIVE DISORDER | Chronic or sudden disturbance in memory, identity, or consciousness, eg. personality disorder, amnesia, fugue |
| DYSPHORIA | A bad or unpleasant feeling or mood |
| DYSTHYMIA | A depressive disorder, sad period or down in the dumps that persists over a 2 years, but not as severe as major depression and no psychotic features (delusions and hallucinations) |
| EGO | Central coordinating branch of the personality or mind. |
| ELECTROCONVULSIVE THERAPY | Electric current is used to produce convulsions and loss of consciousness. tx for depression. Anesthesia now use so convulsion is not observable |
| EUPHORIA | A good feeing, or a good mood |
| EUTHYMIC | Feeling well |
| EXHIBITIONISM | Compulsive need to expose one's body, particularly the genitals or breast to an unsuspecting stranger |
| FAMILY THERAPY | Treatment of an entire family to resolve and shed light on conflicts |
| FETISHISM | The use of nonliving objects as substitutes for a human sexual love object |
| FREE ASSOCIATION | Psychoanalytic technique in which the patient verbalizes, without censorship, the passing contents of his or her mind |
| FUGUE | Flight from customary surroundings; dissociative disorder |
| GENDER IDENTITY DISORDER | Strong and persistent cross-gender identification with the opposite sex |
| GROUP THERAPY | Group of patients with similar problems gain insight into their personalities through discussion and interaction with each other |
| HALLUCINATION | False sensory perception (hearing voices and seeing through) |
| HALLUCINOGEN | a substance that produces hallucinations. |
| HISTRIONIC PERSONALITY | Emotional, attention seeking, immature, and dependent; irrational outbursts and tantrums. flamboyant and theatrical |
| HYPNOSIS | Induced trance (state of altered consciousness) |
| HYPOCHONDRIASIS | A mental disorder characterized by excessive fear of or preoccupation with a serious illness, despite medical testing states there is no problem |
| HYPOMANIA | A condition similar to mania but less severe. A mild form of mania |
