Narrative Vocabulary

TermDefinition
antagonist The adversary or opponent of the main character or protagonist; usually the “bad” character or villain.
character A person (actor) in a story, play, novel, movie, etc.
climax The most intense, exciting, or important part of a story, movie, novel, etc.
conflict A struggle or a problem (often between two characters).
dialogue A conversation between characters in a narrative; words that are intended to be spoken aloud in a script.
diary/journal A daily record of personal events, experiences, and observations
historical fiction A narrative that takes place in the past and includes an imaginative reconstruction of historical events and people
inference Using facts, observations, and logic or reasoning to come to an assumption or conclusion.
moral Why the story was written based on what the characters experienced, usually a life lesson discovered at the end of the text
narrative a story; a written or spoken account of events
plot The main events (storyline) of a play, story, movie, etc.
point of view 1st person: “I” is the main character telling own story; 2nd person: narrator addresses the protagonist as “you”; 3rd person: narrator is not a character in the story, talks about other characters as “he” and “she”
protagonist The leading, or principal character; usually the “good” character or hero.
resolution The action or event which solves the problem or conflict.
setting The time and place in which an event occurs; surroundings
theme The main topic/subject of the story
exposition the insertion of important background information within a story
first person point of view One of the story's characters serves as a narrator and readers watch the story unfold through that character's eyes. The character or narrator speaks to readers in his or her own voice, frequently using the pronoun 'I'.
third person point of view A form of storytelling in which a narrator relates all action in third person, using third person pronouns such as "he" or "she."
