| Behavior genetics | The study of the relative effects of heredity and the environment |
| Evolutionary psychology | The study of how psychosocial traits affect natural selection, producing individuals with optimal mental traits |
| Chromosomes | Chains of DNA |
| Genome | The collection of all of an individual's genes |
| Temperament | Emotional excitability (reactive, easygoing, intense, etc.) |
| Heritability | The extent to which a trait can be attributed to genetics |
| Nature vs. nurture | Is personality determined by genes or the environment? |
| Molecular genetics | Subfield of biology that studies the molecular structure and function of genes - aims to identify specific genes that influence behavior |
| Individualism | Emphasizing your own goals and defining your identity in terms of your personality traits |
| Collectivism | Emphasizing the goals of a group (family, work group, etc.) and focusing on group identifications |
| Gender identity | The internal sense of being male or female |
| Gender type | How much like our own gender stereotypes we are - some boys have more "masculine" traits than others; some girls have more "feminine" traits than others |
| Social Learning Theory | Children learn gender-linked behaviors by observing, imitating, and being punished or rewarded |
| Gender Schema Theory | In childhood, you develop concepts/schemas including one for your gender. Then gender becomes a lens through which you view experiences. |
