TermDefinition
Energy the ability to do work or cause change
Kinetic Energy energy that an object has due to its motion; related to the object's mass and velocity
Potential Energy stored energy that results from the position or shape of an object
Gravitational Potential Energy the potential energy related to an object's height; equal to weight x height
Elastic Potential Energy the potential energy associated with objects that can be stretched or compressed
Mechanical Energy the energy that is possessed by an object due to its motion or due to its position
Thermal Energy the total potential and kinetic energy that comes from heat generated by the movement of tiny particles within an object
Electrical Energy the energy of moving electrical charges
Chemical Energy a form of potential energy which is stored in the chemical bonds of atoms and molecules; it is released during chemical reactions
Electromagnetic Energy a form of energy that travels through space as waves
Energy Transformation a change from one form of energy to another; also known as an energy conversion
Law of Conservation of Energy the rule stating that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, but can be changed from one form to another
