Soil Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| soil | The loose material that covers much of Earth's surface and is made up of bits of rock, minerals, and material that was once part of living things. |
| weathering | The slow breaking apart or wearing away of rock into smaller pieces caused by water, wind, ice, and plant roots. |
| clay | A type of soil that is made up of very small, tightly packed particles. Water does NOT pass easily through this soil. It acts like a sponge. |
| silt | A type of soil that is soft, smooth, and contains slightly larger particles than clay. Water passes less easily through this soil. |
| humus | the decayed remains of plants and animals |
| erosion | the movement of weathered rock material from one place to another |
| loam | A type of soil in which plants grow well. It contains sand, silt, clay, and humus |
| sand | A type of soil with very hard, medium sized particles. Water passes easily though the soil. |
