Oligarchy small group of people with wealth or power have limited/SOME power/rights/freedoms/participation (Simon Says arms around your peeps)
Unitary all power goes to the central government; NO distribution of power (France, Italy) (Simon Says arms straight up and in fists)
Confederation loose alliance of countries or smaller political units have limited powers given to them by a central government who can also take those powers away (EU) (Simon Says Spirit Fingers)
Federal power is divided (shared) between the central government and smaller political units (local government) example: U.S. (Simon Says arms down and hold hands)
Government a body with authority to make laws, enforce those laws, and interpret the laws when disagreements arise
Autocracy one leader holds all the power - citizens have NO power/rights/freedoms/participation (Simon Says fist with pointing finger at everyone else)
Democracy the citizens hold ALL the power/rights/freedoms/participation by electing officials to represent them in government (Simon Says raise your hand)
Communism a single political party who holds the power and dominates all aspects of life in a country; government that owns most everything; citizens shares things equally (USSR, East Germany, East Berlin)
Parliamentary Democracy a prime minister runs the day to day business of the country and is chosen from the political party that has the most representatives in the parliament/legislature (U.K.). Citizens vote for the members of the parliament but NOT for the Prime Minister.
Presidential Democracy citizens elect the executive branch leaders (President & VP) AND the representatives for the legislature (U.S.); less common in the world
Absolute Monarchy a government in which the supreme/ALL power is in the hands of a monarch (King/Queen) No citizen participation; similar to a dictatorship (Simon Says put a crown on your head)
Constitutional Monarchy a system of government in which the monarch (King/Queen) has limited/very little power and performs only ceremonial duties (U.K.) (Simon Says princess pageant wave)
Dictatorship form of government in which a ruler has ABSOLUTE power; the citizen do not possess the right to choose their own leader (North Korea)
Representative Democracy citizens elect leaders to REPRESENT their rights and interests in government; the elected leaders do the day-to-day work of governing the country for the people as a whole (the citizens don't do these things for themselves - they have jobs!)
Direct Democracy form of democracy that no longer exists - example: Ancient Greece; there are no representatives; citizens (each and every single one) are directly involved in the day-to-day work of governing the country and making/voting on the laws
Theocracy a form of government in which a religious leader uses the majority religion in the country & its holy book to determine what can be law & consequences; a God is recognized as the supreme civil ruler (ayatollah - Iran) (Simon Says - prayer hands)
Anarchy does not exist in any country today; only exists when there is chaos in a country due to a change/lack of government; a total absence of governmental authority
Socialism any of various social systems based on shared or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods; combination of capitalism and communism; (communist government with market economy) (China)
European Union (EU) a political & economic union of 28 member states located primarily in Europe; promote cooperation and economic growth among members; have a free trade agreement without tariffs
NATO a political and military alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty which was signed on April 4, 1949 which includes 28 member states from North America and Europe who promote freedom and security of the North Atlantic area
