Chapter 5 Terms
10th Grade PS - The Structure of Matter
Term | Definition |
---|---|
chemical bond | the attraction or force that holds atoms together |
chemical structure | the arrangement of atoms in a substance |
structural formula | a way to represent the structure of a compound by using chemical symbols to represent atoms, and lines (sticks) to show bonds between atoms and how the atoms are arranged |
space-filling model | a way to represent the structure of a compound by showing how much space (volume) is taken up by each atom |
ionic bond | a bond formed by the attraction between oppositely charged ions |
metallic bond | a bond formed by the attraction between positively charged metal ions and the electrons around them |
covalent bond | a bond formed when atoms share one or more pairs of electrons |
valence electrons | electrons shared when atoms form covalent bonds |
nonpolar covalent bond | a bond in which atoms share a pair of electrons equally |
polar covalent bond | a bond in which atoms share a pair of electrons unequally |
polyatomic ion | an single ion made of two or more atoms |
molecular formula | shows the number and kinds of atoms in a molecule, but not the arrangement of atoms |
What is a monatomic ion? | a single ion made of just one charged atom, such as Na+ |
What is a cation? | a name for any positively charged ion |
What is an anion? | a name for any negatively charged ion |
What is a diatomic molecule? | a molecule made up of only two identical atoms (non-metal) bound to one another by covalent bonds |
