Vocabulary for Matter and Elements

TermDefinition
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space.
Mass The material that matter makes up of
Volume How much room/space matter takes up
Density D= m/v the amount of matter/stuff matter takes up within a specific space
Atom The elements smallest part. Atoms building block
Electron Particle of an atom, and has a negative charge. Moves around the nucleus. Has a force that lets it get together with other atoms forming everything everywhere.
Proton Particle of an atom. Has a positive charge. Also, in a nucleus.
Neutron Particle of an atom, and has no charge.
Periodic Table A grid that shows all of the elements by their properties.
Element A simple substance that doesn't break down and makes up everything in the world.
Periods/Rows Rows that tell how many energy levels each element has.
Groups or family/ columns Columns that tell how many valence electrons each element has.
Valence electrons the electrons that move on the outer energy level of an atom.
Atomic number how many protons an atom has.
Atomic mass a measurement of mass for an atom.
Chemical property A substance combining with another substance to form a new and different substance.
Physical property State of matter and appearance of something.
Ionic bond when elements share electrons during bonding
Covalent Bond when elements share electrons during bonding
Chemical Change/ Reaction elements bonds together through the attractive force of electrons creating a whole new and different substance.
Compound/ Molecule
Mixture
Nobel Gases

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
