cause and effect how something that happens effects something else
fact and opinion how an author might use what they believe combined with provable data
compare and contrast how one thing is similar to or different from something else
problem and solution how an author identifies an issue and gives possible solutions
objective summary a brief restatement of main points without using your opinion
explicit information an idea that is stated in the text
implicit information an idea that is understood but is not stated in the text
inference combining what you know with what you read to draw a conclusion
medium the form in which information is shared (article, video, etc.)
textual evidence information taken from the text
central or main idea the chief topic of a passage that is expressed or implied in the text
organizational structures the way expository text is organized
context clues using the text to determine the meanings of words and phrases
signal words In text clues to figure out the structure of the writing
tone the attitudes and feeling of the author towards the subject
