TermDefinition
Text Features features found most commonly in nonfiction text that are meant to draw attention to certain points or ideas
Title name of a book, article or essay
Pictures images or graphics often found in writing
Table/Chart summaries or facts or data written in columns or rows
Diagram a graphic that has labels
Bullet Points a symbol or graphic that lists something
Index an alphabetical listing of words found in the text and what page number they appear on
Glossary an alphabetical listing of words that show the meaning of each word
Text Box a group of text that is inserted into an article that is not part of the original text
Caption Text that identifies a picture
Heading What the text is mostly about
Table of contents A list of topics and on what page it starts
Autobiography A piece of nonfiction that is written by self about self
Biography A piece of nonfiction that is written by another about another
Memoir A writer's record of expierences
Essay, Newspaper, Article and Diary All forms of nonfiction
Descriptive/Spatial Gives great detail to provide an image in thought. information is organized in order of space (top to bottom, left to right).
Chronicalogical information in the passage is organized in order of time.
Sequence information is expressed as a hierarchy or in priority. (steps)
Compare and Contrast two or more things are described. Their similarities and differences are discussed.
Problem and Solution a problem is described and a response or solution is proposed or explained.
Cause and Effect The results of something are explained.
Authors purpose To Pursuade, inform, entertain
Objective The author shows no form of bias
Subjective The author shows bias to the subject and incorporates his opinion on the subject
Paraphrase The use of different words to summarize the same thoughts
Thesis A statement or theory in regards to a subject that is to be maintained or to be proven
