Different strategies/techniques that authors use to enhance short stories
| Term | Definition |

| Irony | A literary device that exploits readers' expectations when expected occurrences are different from what actually happens |
| Imagery | Verbal expression of sensory experiences; imagery is created by details that appeal to one or more of the five senses |
| Figurative Language | Images such as metaphors and smilies that describe one thing in terms of another; not meant to be taken literally |
| Point of view | The perspective from which the narration is told |
| Theme | A literary work's central idea or main message; not directly stated |
| Symbol | Any object, animal, event, person, or place that represents itself, but also stands for something else |
| Allusion | A reference to a well-known person, event, or place from history, music, art or another literary work. |
