Plot Elements

The different parts that make up a plot to a short story

TermDefinition
Exposition Characters and setting are introduced, and the conflict begins to unfold
Rising Action Events that occur to complicate the plot
Conflict The problem or struggle in the story
Climax The greatest point of interest or suspense in the story; the turning point
Falling Action The events between the climax and the resolution
Resolution The end of the story, when the conflict is resolved and loose ends are tied up
Flashback An interruption in the plot events to relate to an earlier event
Foreshadowing Hints or clues that suggest further action
