Motion Vocabulary

TermDefinition
motion a change in an objects position compared to a fixed position or reference point
reference point a place or object used for comparison to determine if an object is in motion
distance the length between two places
apparent motion when things appear to an observer to be moving but are not actually changing position
speed how fast an object's position changes
average speed the total distance traveled divided by the total amount of time
distance-time graph graph that shows the distance traveled by an object when measurements are taken every second
velocity a description of a moving object's speed and direction
acceleration a measure of the change in velocity during a period of time
speed-time graph shows how speed changes over time
