Figurative Language

Glossary of Poetic Terms

SIMILE Compares two things using the words "like" or "as". Example: The snow was as soft as a pillow
REPETITION When words, phrases, lines or stanzas are repeated
MOOD How the poem makes the reader feel, or the feelings created in the reader
IMAGERY Use of details to help the reader imagine something. Imagery can describe how something looks, sounds, tastes, smells, or feels.
CHARACTER Is the person in the poem.
SPEAKER In a poem, is the person, character, or object that is the voice of the poem.
PERSONIFICATION When the objects are describe as if they are human. The tree whispered to each other
FREE VERSE Form or poetry where there is no set pattern. There is no set rhythm or rhyme.
LYRIC POEM Is a type of short poem. Describe what the speaker thinks or how the speaker feels.
THEME The main topic or the main idea of a poem.
METAFORA Compara sin las palabras -como- tal como- Ejemplo: La nieve era como una almohada suave.
SIMIL Compara dos cosas que no se relacionan usando las palabras: -como- tal como- Eres como una rosa perfumada.
REPETICION Cuando palabras, frases, lineas o estrofas se repiten.
ESTADO DE ANIMO Como el poema hace sentir al lector.
IMAGENES El uso de detalles que ayuda al lector a imaginarse algo. Las imágenes puede describir como algo se vé, suena, sabe, huele o se siente.
PERSONAJES Es la persona en el poema
VOZ DEL POEMA (DENTRO DEL POEMA) Es la persona, personaje u objeto que es la voz dentro del poema.
PERSONIFICACION Cuando los objetos son descritos como si fueran personas o humanos.
VERSOS LIBRES Forma de poema donde no hay patrones, rima o ritmo.
POEMA LIRICO Poema que rima. Nos dice lo que piensa y siente el poeta.
TEMA El tema más importante del poema o la idea principal
