Practice on science vocabulary.

TermDefinition
Biotic factors Living parts of the ecosystem.
Abiotic factors Nonliving parts of the ecosystem.
Producer/autotroph An organism that makes its own energy using sunlight or chemicals.
Consumer/Heterotroph An organism that consumes other organisms energy.
Decomposer An organism that decomposes organic materials and recycles nutrients back into the ecosystem.
Herbivore An organism that eats plants as food.
Carnivore An organism that eats meat as food.
Omnivore An organism that eats both plants and meat as food.
Scavenger An organism that feeds on dead organic matter for energy.
Food Chain A diagram that shows how matter and energy move through an ecosystem.
Food Web A diagram that shows all the possible ways that energy can travel through the ecosystem by linking food chains together.
Sun's role in food. It provides energy for all living organisms on Earth.
chain/web Any model that can show one or more ways for energy to travel through an ecosystem.
Energy Pyramid A diagram that shows how energy is moved and passed on throughout a food chain.
Symbiosis A close relationship between two organisms that benefits at least one of the organisms.
Mutualism When both species benefit form the relationship.
Commensalism When only one species benefits and the other is not harmed or helped.
Parasitism When one species benefits and the other species is harmed from the relationship.
Predator/Prey When one organism(predator) eats another organism(prey).
Competition When organisms compete for food, shelter, and mates.
Adaptation A trait that an organism develops in order to survive in its habitat.
