Unit 1
Operant Conditioning
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Operant Conditioning | Whether or not a behavior occurs depends on the consequences. |
| Reinforcement | event/object that strengthens a response (4 types) |
| Primary | satisfy biological needs (i.e.—food, water, shelter) |
| Secondary | learned reinforcers (i.e.—money, praise, grades, acceptance, respect) |
| Positive | Pleasant Consequence (i.e.—permission to use car/go out) |
| Negative | Removal of something unpleasant (i.e. don’t have to do chores) |
| Punishment | Event/Object that weakens a response |
| Primary Punishment | unpleasant consequences—removal of basic needs (go to bed without dinner), causing pain. |
| Secondary Punishment | criticism, fines, scolding |
| Continuous Reinforcement | Response is reinforced each time it occurs |
| Intermittent Reinforcement | Reinforce only some responses—only some of the time |
| Shaping | Reinforcing small steps toward larger behavior |
| Extrinsic Motivation | Motivated to perform a behavior based on external rewards |
| Intrinsic Motivation | Desire to perform based on internal rewards |
