Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Branch of the U.S. government responsible for regulating the sale and use of specific drugs.
Legend Drug a drug sold only by prescription. Labeled "Rx only"
Pharmacognosy the study and identification of the natural sources of drugs.
Pharmacology the science of drugs and their interactions with the systems of living animals.
Pharmacopoeias official listings of medicinal preparations.
therapeutic drugs drugs that relieve symptoms of a disease.
prophylactic drugs drugs that decrease the severity of a disease.
placebo an inactive substance with no treatment value.
Pharmakon Greek word meaning magic spell, remedy, or poison.
Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) a national organization that develops technician standards and serves as a credentialing agency for pharmacy technicians.
Pharmacy Technician an individual working in a pharmacy, assists the pharmacist in doing tasks that do not require the judgment of a pharmacist.
Pharmacist One who is licensed to prepare and sell/dispense drugs, compounds, and fill prescriptions.
Patent government grant that gives the drug company sole right to manufacture a drug for a certain number of years.
over-the-counter (OTC) drug a drug sold without prescription.
New Drug Application (NDA) Vehicle through which a drug company formally proposes that the FDA approve of a new drug.
Drug Sponsor the company responsible for testing a drug.
