| Pharmacology | the science of drugs and their interactions with the systems of living animals. |
| Pharmacopoeias | official listings of medicinal preparations. |
| therapeutic drugs | drugs that relieve symptoms of a disease. |
| prophylactic drugs | drugs that decrease the severity of a disease. |
| placebo | an inactive substance with no treatment value. |
| Pharmakon | Greek word meaning magic spell, remedy, or poison. |
| Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) | a national organization that develops technician standards and serves as a credentialing agency for pharmacy technicians. |
| Pharmacy Technician | an individual working in a pharmacy, assists the pharmacist in doing tasks that do not require the judgment of a pharmacist. |
| Pharmacist | One who is licensed to prepare and sell/dispense drugs, compounds, and fill prescriptions. |
| Patent | government grant that gives the drug company sole right to manufacture a drug for a certain number of years. |
| over-the-counter (OTC) drug | a drug sold without prescription. |
| New Drug Application (NDA) | Vehicle through which a drug company formally proposes that the FDA approve of a new drug. |
| Drug Sponsor | the company responsible for testing a drug. |
