Short Story Terms

English

TermDefinition
Plot A series of related events that make up a story
Exposition Section that introduces characters, setting, and conflicts
Conflict A struggle between two opposing forces
Climax The moment when the action comes to its highest point of dramatic conflict
Resolution The conclusion of the story, includes the story's action after the climax until the end of the story
Complications Obstacles that increase tension of the story's conflict
Suspense Techniques used by the author to keep readers interested in the story and wondering what will happen next
Foreshadowing Clues the writer puts in the story to give the reader a hint of what's to come
Internal conflict Takes place in a characters own mind
External conflict A character struggles against an outside force
Fantasy The creative imagination; unrestrained
Inference A conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning
Direct characterization When the author directly states what the character's personality is like
Indirect characterization Showing a character's personality through -actions -thoughts/feelings -words -appearance -other character's observations or reactions
Round characters Fully developed with many different character traits
Flat characters Stereotyped, one-dimensional, few traits
