| Bias / Subjective | personal preference/feeling/opinion |
| Connotation | added meaning/feeling associated with words |
| Denotation | dictionary definition (literal meaning) |
| Discrepancy | a break in a pattern |
| Explicit | directly stated in the text (evidence) |
| Figurative language/meaning | a symbolic meaning usually meant to describe something through comparison |
| Hyperbole | exaggeration Example: I forgot to eat breakfast and I'm STARVING! |
| Idiom | an expression that is commonly understood by a certain group of people (time, place, etc) "You are the apple of my eye!" |
| Imagery | descriptive language that appeals to the 5 senses |
| Implicit | an idea that is not directly stated and is based on evidence in the text |
| Inductive conclusion/reasoning | The process of forming an idea based on critical analysis of the explicit evidence in the text |
| Inference | a conclusion based on information from the text and one's own knowledge/experience |
| Literal meaning | "real" or directly stated meaning (denotation) |
| Metaphor | comparison between two things without using like- as- than- or resembles Example: Ricardo was a beast on the field. |
| Mood | the "feeling" or "atmosphere" IN a story or poem |
| Narrator | the person who is telling the story (speaker in poetry) |
| "notice" | when you read something that seems interesting or you think could be a piece of explicit evidence |
| Objective / Unbiased | neutral |
| Paraphrase | put in your own words |
| Personification | giving non-human things human characteristics example |
| Plot | structure of a story (exposition- conflict - rising action- climax- falling action- resolution) |
| Simile | comparing 2 things to illustrate a similarity using like- as- than- or resembles example: school is like a prison |
| Summary | a brief(shorter) version |
| Symbol | something that represents a more complex idea example |
| Synthesize | put together - connect to form a new idea |
| Theme | the message or lesson about the topic that the author is trying to convey to the reader |
| three levels of questioning | Different levels of thinking about the text 1- questions about explicit details in the text 2- questions about implicit ideas in the text or about the text 3- questions that extend, evaluate, or apply the ideas in the text |
| Tone | the author's attitude TOWARD the topic |
| Topic | the concepts that are addressed in the story/poem |
