Elements of Literature notes
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Setting | Time and place; where and when. The setting of The Giver is a community in the future |
| Protagonist | the character (usually the main character) who has a goal to achieve, a desire to fulfill, or an obstacle to overcome; sometimes referred to as the “good guy”. The protagonist in The Giver is Jonas. |
| Antagonist | The character that gets in the protagonist’s way, making it harder for the goal to be accomplished. The antagonist in The Giver is both the community AND Jonas! Yes, he can be both since he has internal conflicts! |
| Methods of Character Development | Speech, thoughts, actions, appearance, others, narrator |
| External Conflict | when the protagonist has a problem that comes from the outside world--starts somewhere else; referred to as person vs. person, person vs. nature, person vs. society, or person vs. technology |
| Internal Conflict | when the protagonist has a problem that comes from within--like a moral dilemma, crisis, or decision to make (tell my sister about her bad haircut or not); referred to as person vs. self |
