Properties of Matter

TermDefinition
Density the measurement of how much mass an object has in a given space or volume. Measured in g/mL or g/cm3
Flammability the ability or likelihood of something to catch on fire
Solubility the ability or likelihood of something to dissolve in a solution
Odor the characteristic scent of a substance
Volume the amount of space taken up by a specific object or substance. Measured in liters.
Mass The amount of material present in a substance of an object. Measured in grams
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space
Atoms the building blocks of matter. Made up of protons, electrons and neutrons
Molecules Two or more atoms are joined together chemically. Elements can be different or the same.
Compound A molecule that has two or more different elements bonded together.
Heterogeneous Parts do not combine completely or evenly.
Homogeneous uniform distribution of parts
Mixture Combination of substances in which each keeps its own properties; can be separated; no chemical change
Solution Groups of molecules that are mixed in a completely even distribution.
Solute The substance to be dissolved
Solvent The substance doing the dissolving
Colloid Particles are larger than in a solution but do not settle out
Suspension Particles an be seen with the naked eye and they will settle out over time.
Physical Property Characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing the substance
Chemical Property Characteristic of a substance that is observed by changing the substance
Physical Change Change of a substance in which the substance does not change
Chemical Change Change of a substance in which a new substance is formed.
