Scientific Method

Vocabulary for the Scientific Method Unit

TermDefinition
Scientific Method A series of steps that are used to investigate a natural occurence.
Observation/Research (Step 1) Make observations about the world around you and/or research a topic you find interesting.
Problem/Question (Step 2) Develop a question or problem that can be solved through experimentation.
Hypothesis you make an educated guess or predication about what you think the answer to your question might be.
Experiment develop and follow a procedure. Include a detailed materials list.
Collect and Analyze data modify the procedure if needed. Confirm the results by retesting. Include tables, graphs, chars, journal entries, and photographs.
Conclusion You stated whether you ACCEPT or REJECT your
Communicate Results Share your results. Be prepared to present your results to an audience. Expect questions from the audience.
Control Group the group that serves as the standard of comparison. This is the group you compare to all other groups you test.
Constant are all the factors that the experimenter attempts to keep the same.
Variable this is what you are testing. This is what will change in the experiment.
