Figurative Language Terms to Know
| Term | Definition |

| simile | A comparison of two unlike things which uses "like" or "as". For example: She is like a rose. |
| metaphor | A comparison of two unlike things which does NOT use "like" or "as". For example: She is a rose. |
| onomatopoeia | A word which sounds like it is spelled, or a sound effect. For example: zoom, bang, thump, swish. |
| aliteration | Two or more words close together in a passage which begin with the same sound. For example: Peter Piper or Dudley Dursley. |
| personification | Using a human characteristic when referencing a non-human thing or animal. For example: The wind slapped at my cheeks. |
| idiom | A colorful and sometimes cultural way of saying describing something in a figurative and not a literal way. For example: It is raining cats and dogs. |
| literal | Language which is true. For example: My dog is a carnivore. |
| figurative | Language which makes comparisons between unrelated things or ideas, in order to show something about a subject. For example: In the kitchen, when I cook, my dog is a tap dancer. |
| hyperbole | An extreme exaggeration. For example: I have a ton of homework. |
