Bio Vocab #4
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell Membrane | protects the cell and regulates what enters and leaves the cell |
| Polar | Phosphate head that faces the outside and inside of cell, freely interacting with water. |
| Non-Polar | Fatty acid tails, attached to phosphate head that remain facing inside of cell membrane, avoiding water in and out of cell. |
| Hydrophobic | Scared of water |
| Hydrophillic | Water loving |
| Fluid Mosaic | Flexible Lipid bilayer with proteins embedded |
| Simple Diffusion | Small molecules like oxygen, water, and Carbon Dioxide can move through the lipid layer from high to low concentration. |
| Facilitated Diffusion | Molecules travel from high to low, through channel protein. |
| Semi-Permeable | Lets SOME things pass through |
| Equilibrium | concentration is the same throughout the system |
| Active Transport | Uses ATP energy to move molecules across the membrane |
| Passive Transport | Does not require energy to move molecules across the membrane |
| Channel Protein | Protein that allows certain molecules to pass in and out of cell, from high to low concentration |
| Protein Pump | protein that allows specific molecules in and out of cell, from high to low concentration, and uses ATP |
