Lifespan Psychology

TermDefinition
Attachment A deep emotional bond between the child and primary caregiver.
Maternal Deprivation The effects of separating infants and young children from their primary caregiver.
Privation Is the absence or lack or basic necessities.
Proximity Maintenance This means that the child aims to explore the world but still tries to stay close to his caregiver.
Safe Haven The child can rely on their primary caregiver for comfort at times when they feel threatened, frightened or in danger.
Secure Base The caregiver gives a good and reliable foundation to the child as they go on learning.
Separation Distress The child becomes unhappy and sorrowful when they become separated from their caregiver.
Secure distressed when mum leaves the room, seeks proximity on return, not comforted by the stranger
Insecure avoidant anxiety, rejects mother, no attempt to seek proximity
insecure resistant not effected by mum return. distressed when mum leaves, not bothered by the stranger
