Lifespan Psychology
| Term | Definition |

| Attachment | A deep emotional bond between the child and primary caregiver. |
| Maternal Deprivation | The effects of separating infants and young children from their primary caregiver. |
| Privation | Is the absence or lack or basic necessities. |
| Proximity Maintenance | This means that the child aims to explore the world but still tries to stay close to his caregiver. |
| Safe Haven | The child can rely on their primary caregiver for comfort at times when they feel threatened, frightened or in danger. |
| Secure Base | The caregiver gives a good and reliable foundation to the child as they go on learning. |
| Separation Distress | The child becomes unhappy and sorrowful when they become separated from their caregiver. |
| Secure distressed | when mum leaves the room, seeks proximity on return, not comforted by the stranger |
| Insecure avoidant | anxiety, rejects mother, no attempt to seek proximity |
| insecure resistant | not effected by mum return. distressed when mum leaves, not bothered by the stranger |
